2010 Grande Prairie Stompede Champions – TOMCO Group of Companies Outfit (L-R): , Outrider Kris Flanagan, Driver Rae Croteau Jr., Outrider Ryan MacNeill. Photo By Billy Melville

It was a cold rainy night in Grande Prairie but it didn’t damper the spirit of Rae Croteau Jr. who captured the 2010 Grande Prairie Stompede Championship on Sunday night. Croteau Jr., driving the TOMCO Group of Companies outfit, and along with outriders Kris Flanagan and Ryan MacNeill, captured the 2010 Grande Prairie Stompede Championship and the $15,000.00 bonus for the first time in his career. It was the first career WPCA Dodge Pro Tour show championship for outrider Ryan MacNeill.

Coming off barrel position number 3 in the sudden death championship final heat number 9, Croteau Jr. won the 2010 Grande Prairie Stompede with a penalty free run of 1:21.40, and won the heat by a whopping 5.12 seconds over runner-up Reg Johnstone who came off barrel position number 4 and was assessed a 5 second penalty for knocking a barrel. Cliff Cunningham in his first ever sudden death final placed third from barrel position number 1 after knocking over both barrels, while Kirk Sutherland, who came off the number 2 barrel, suffered equipment problems and was unable to complete the race.

As far as the day results are concerned, 3-time Grande Prairie Champion Jerry Bremner posted the top time of the night with a 1:19.46, followed closely by Buddy Bensmiller, with Kurt Bensmiller, Troy Flad and Colt Cosgrave rounding out the top 5 for the night.

The next stop on the WPCA Dodge Pro Tour will be the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede in Medicine Hat, Alberta starting on Friday June 11, 2010 at 7:00pm. Reg Johnstone is the defending Medicine Hat Champion. Live radio coverage for the Medicine Hat Exhibition & Stampede will air on Chuckwagon Radio beginning at 6:45.

Real Ranch Horses Sell Real Well

Saturday, April 17 was one of the first sun-shiny days of spring in Billings, Montana, and the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch was the perfect meeting place that day for real ranch cowboys and cowgirls with good horses to sell and prospective buyers who came from across the country looking for reliable mounts. It was the fourth annual “REAL” Ranch Horse Invitational Sale, and dependable geldings were in high demand once again this year.

Don Selle of Baker, Montana brought the high selling horse to this year’s “REAL” Ranch Horse Invitational Sale. “Superman” is shown here with buyer Mary Hanson of Edgar, Montana. Also pictured, Kellie Yost represented Nutra-Lix, sponsor of the award vests presented for high-selling horse, at the sale.

This well-attended sale organized by the Montana Ranch Horse Association is where genuine ranch-made horses preview fresh and unridden before the crowd the morning of the sale, in an effort to show the true character of each horse.  Horse hands brought their offerings to the sale this year from ranches in Montana, Wyoming, the Dakotas, Nebraska, and Idaho. A team roping preview and an open ranch horse competition held the day before the sale gave sellers a chance to show off any sale horses with arena merit.

Don Selle of Baker, Montana brought the high selling horse to the 2010 “REAL” Ranch Horse Sale, just like he did in 2009. Lot 56 – Starburst Rackateer, a 10-year-old gelding finished in both heading and heeling, had also been used to pick up on and haze off of. Known as “Superman,” this prime-age gentleman was named the 2008 Champion Bridle Horse at the Black Hills Stock Show Ranch Horse Competition. He went home with Mary Hanson of Edgar, Montana, for the price of $8,500.

Second high seller of the day was a 7-year-old gelding, Lot 29 – Silverdollar Duece, consigned by Chad Rainsdon of Deer Lodge, Montana.  The quiet giant measured 16.2 hands and brought $8,400, selling to Mike Jorgenson of Corvallis, Montana.

Jake and Jessica Hahn of Bridger, Montana offered the third high seller of the day, Lot 1 – Triple Bar Slots, and exchanged him for $7,700.  The 5-year-old ranch gelding was extremely gentle and handy to boot and will make his new home at the Fishtail Basin Ranch, Fishtail, Montana.

The top five selling ranch horses averaged $7,900 at this year’s “REAL” Sale, while the top 10 averaged $6,905 and the top 20 $6,075.  All the ranch horses selling averaged $4,975.

This year’s offering included a dozen green ranch horses as well. The youngsters came to the sale with background and potential, just not as much experience.  Sky Grant of Lovell, Wyoming, brought the high-selling green ranch horse to the “REAL” Sale this year.  Lot 20 – MNM Cruzer, a 5-year-old gelding, brought $5,500 and sold to Gary and Callie DeVries of Bridger, Montana.  The top five selling green horses at the 2010 “REAL” Sale averaged $4,140, and all 12 of them averaged $3,475.

As a special addition to this year’s “REAL” Ranch Horse Invitational Sale, Rawhide Quarter Horses (Nate, TJ and Jake Wald) of Lodge Grass, Montana donated proceeds from the auction of a 2008 gray gelding out of their program to the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch, which provides residential treatment services for at-risk youth.  Mr. and Mrs. Rick Gilliland of Livingston, Montana, purchased the colt for $1,600.

Nate Wald is shown riding his stallion Stylish Tip, sire of the benefit colt donated by Rawhide Quarter Horses (Nate, TJ and Jake Wald) and auctioned off at the “REAL” Ranch Horse Invitational Sale. The colt sold to Mr. & Mrs. Rick Gilliland from Livingston, Montana, with proceeds benefiting the Yellowstone Boys & Girls Ranch.

Prospective buyers came to the sale from across the nation and Canada. After the auctioneer’s final call, horses were claimed by buyers from Montana, Wyoming, Idaho, Washington, Colorado, Virginia, Alberta, and Saskatchewan. Volume buyer at the sale was Switchback Ranch of Roscoe, Montana.

Next year’s sale is scheduled for April 15-16 at the same location. For more information, contact sale organizer Jack Blankenship at realranchhorses@hotmail.com or 406-446-2203.  Visit www.realranchhorses.com.

Weekend Pro Rodeo Update

The Grande Prairie Stompede is now underway in the northern part of the province, and should prove an exciting four days, especially given the fact it marks the first stop on the Wrangler Canadian Professional Rodeo Tour trail.

Arena Director Jason Ungarian has been looking forward to watching the bronc riding and is pleased with what he’s seen so far.

“There’s nothing finer than a good bronc ride,” he grins, and emphasizes that all he really needs is “a crowd to show up and our stock to buck, which it has been doing. (Yesterday) it was outstanding.”

Luke Butterfield set arena record at Grande Prairie Stompede.

Luke Butterfield of Ponoka, Alberta, helped demonstrate the high caliber riding in the saddle bronc during the first performance on Thursday when he posted an arena-record 89-point ride on Outlawbuckers’ Blue Eyed Trapper.

The timed event athletes have also been making a statement, including Lethbridge, Alberta barrel racer Rana Koopmans, who also broke an arena record at the Stompede grounds during Wednesday’s slack performance when she ran the cloverleaf in 14.99 seconds.

The four-day rodeo runs until on May 30.

Two more rodeos get going on May 28: the Bonnyville Pro Rodeo in Bonnyville, Alberta and the Cowtown Pro Rodeo in Maple Creek, Saskatchewan.

Bonnyville is celebrating 23 years this spring, and a new attraction to their event.

According to Russ Griffith of the Bonnyville Pro Rodeo and Chuckwagon Association, this is the first year that Bonnyville will have their very own rodeo queen.

Contestants making their way to Bonnyville this weekend can expect something new as well.

“We’ve got the Sports Medicine Team coming here, and it’s the first time we’ve had them,” Griffith announces, proudly revealing that they have had strong enough support from sponsors this year to be able to provide the additional service to the athletes.

Other than that, it’s business as usual.

“We’ve got an action packed weekend, and I can’t think of anybody we don’t have something for between our fair, midway and rodeo,” Griffith states.

In his opinion, it only takes three things to put on an excellent rodeo: “Good stock, good weather and a well-organized event. We’ve got world class Franklin Rodeo (Company) stock that we count on, and we’ve got a super crew of volunteers. The only thing that we hope for is weather,” he says.

The weather is a little iffy over in Maple Creek, but committee person Tom Reardon isn’t letting it bring him down.

“It’ll be a good rodeo, no two ways about it. Good crowds and good scores. And we’re pretty pleased that on Saturday we’ve got Shaun Stroh on War Cry. That’s our marquis match-up: NFR champion versus CFR champion!”

The Cowtown Pro Rodeo is also doing something a little different this year, in addition to all the exciting competitive rodeoing going on at the three-day rodeo.

“We came up with a list of about 40 different families from the district that have been on the same land for 100 years (farming and ranching) and they’ve all been invited. We’re going to bring (reps from each family) into the arena in horse drawn wagons and honour them,” he details. “And on Sunday… it’s going to be Nekaneet Days,” as they honour the Nekaneet First Nation and their role in the community around Maple Creek and in rodeo.

There’s plenty to take in, and Reardon hopes people don’t let the weather deter them from a great weekend.

Tools of the Trade

North, south, east and west, they came in from big country, feedyards, and family ranches, and honest-to-goodness, working-class ranch horses enjoyed their own big weekend at Billings Livestock’s annual “Cow Country Classic” catalog  sale May 22-23.

Friday‘s “Best of the Remuda” ranch horse competition spotlighted 48 head in a judged competition that crowned Hip 41 “Freds Quick Sand” a 2003 AQHA Bay mare raised, owned, and shown by Justin Lawrence, Alzada, MT the 2010 Champion Ranch Horse.

Straight up in the bridle, the good mare by Sir Fred Von Freckle and out of a Dos General daughter came with NRCHA earnings, AQHA points and brought $7,300.

Ranch horses enjoyed their own big weekend at Billings Livestock’s May 22-23 “Cow Country Classic Catalog Sale” where 48 head competed in a judged “Best of the Remuda” ranch horse competition. Top four competition ranch horses include: L to R: 4th place - Delon Parker, Worden, MT aboard Hip 56 “Benjamin Beggar Prom” a 2001 AQHA Sorrel gelding x Mr Peppy Olena purchased by Faith Dean, Bragg Creek, Alberta for $4,500; 3rd place: Hip 237 “Wolfman” a 2002 Grade gelding owned and shown by Jack Christiansen, Oakley, ID brought $4,200; Reserve Champ Hip 81 “Rosco Bob” a 2005 AQHA Red Dun gelding offered by Turner Performance Horses and shown by Chad Turner, Victor, MT sold to Sonja Cuffe, Pleasanton, CA for $8,500; and – the Champ, Hip 41 “Freds Quick Sand” a 2003 AQHA Bay mare raised, owned, and shown by Justin Lawrence, Alzada, MT selling for $7,300.

A market fueled by real cowhorses saw a  95% completed sale percentage – only 44 head of the weekend’s 823 horses were “no-saled” or passed out by the seller.

The top five averaged $7,580.

A bona-fide good gelding, Hip 81 “Rosco Bob” a 2005 AQHA Red Dun gelding sired by Abrakadabracre and out of The Peppy Widow by Peponita earned Reserve Champion Ranch Horse honors in addition to being the weekend’s top sale horse bringing a final bid of $8,500 from Sonja Cuffe, Pleasanton, CA.

Offered by Turner Performance Horses, Victor, MT and shown by Chad Turner, the fancy, quiet fellow came with  NCHA earnings, a solid ranch resume, and had been started heeling and breakaway in the arena.

Keith Munns, Rexburg, ID offered his personal mount, Hip 122 “Go Zan Eyed Parr” a 2003 AQHA Bay Roan gelding x Shi Bars Payday a big, strong, extra gentle gelding that  had been used for general ranch work, trail ridden, and ridden in the arena.

Julie Hunsinger, Drexel, MO purchased the 16 hand, 1400 lb mega-gelding for $8000.

With a double dose of gentle, Hip 145 “Smoke A Splash” a 2002 AQHA Grullo Gelding had been roped on, ranched on, and spent many miles in the mountains.

Consigned by RMO Horses, Heber, UT, the “same today and tomorrow” type gelding brought $6000 and sold to Jeff Harwood, Marion, MI.

Same song with the same verse – older, educated, and honest – the horses in demand continue to be the trustworthy kind with an occupation, while younger horses with little or no riding and horses in poor condition continue to see a softened demand.

Ranch and using geldings brought from $950 to $8,500.

Sale averages include the top five at $7,580; top ten brought $6,680; Top 20 at $5,717; Top 50 brought $4,299, and the top 100 averaged $3,263.

In the loose horse division – as is, where is, how is – the day’s top horse brought $1,600 with the top five averaging $1,100, top ten averaged $975, top 20 brought $806; Top 50 at $643; And the top 100 averaged $506.

Billings Livestock’s “Summer Special Catalog Sale”  is  set for June 26-27and will feature “Team Sorting” horses in addition to a special session of “Buckskins”.

All classes and types of horses will sell, from prospects, mares, stallions, to finished horses.

Take a Look at us Now!

In 2009, the Canadian Western Horse Association (CWHA) held its first ever Finals. With big dreams and expectations, the finals committee headed by Al Wesnoski, gathered sponsorships in excess of $15,000 to give away to CWHA members. Needless to say, the Finals were a huge hit!

Sponsors were looking for something unique to advertise their products and services, the western horse community was in need of a boost and the Finals fueled that fire. The Finals ignited competition in Manitoba. Spectators packed the stands, CWHA enjoyed a membership growth of 35% and many sponsors reported an increase in sales.

While CWHA is growing, we remain true to our mission:  “CWHA gives our membership a place to show their horse, while enjoying a fun family environment”.   In order to accomplish this, we focus on education, creating a fun learning environment that teaches members:

  • About the RULES of each discipline and class.
  • How to PRESENT / SHOW their horse successfully to a judge in a variety of disciplines.
  • When and how to STEP-Up their competition game.

During the show year we highlight a variety of disciplines, by adding monies to stake classes or hosting specific sanctioned events. These efforts are all designed to allow CWHA members to step-up their game, when they are ready.

Barrel Winner - Mary Ann Bach, coach Robert Catellier.

By hiring excellent certified judges throughout the show year, CWHA, encourages judges to give their members valuable feedback once the class has completed. If a competitor puts that feedback into practice, it will assure them a top placing in their selected class.  To bring the education full circle, we encourage our local judges to scribe for our certified judges, thus sharpening our judge’s eye and knowledge.

Reiner Winner – John Stiver.

By educating our exhibitors thru competition and clinics and hiring top judges, we prepare our members for the 2010 2nd Annual CWHA Saddles Series and Finals.

“We are pleased to announce the CWHA Finals committee has raised the bar for the second year and raised over $20,000 in cash and prizes”, states,  Al Wesnoski the Finals Committee Chair.  The committee has been working diligently, designing a show program, acquiring sponsorships, and hiring top judges. These efforts result in delivering a program worthy of sponsor, competitor and spectator interest and commitment.

CWHA is the only horse association in Manitoba that gives away over $20,000 at a single western equine event. In 2010, CWHA will host six shows and two horsemanship clinics, plus our Finals.

Kylie Wasuita – Winner, coach Robert Catellier and presenter Gerry Loewen, owner of PineRidge Equine Park.

Saddles, beautiful leather halters, Montana Silver Smith buckles, Bbankets are just a few of the prizes awarded to our competitors/exhibitors. To be eligible to compete at the CWHA Saddle Series and Finals, a competitor must:

  • Be a member of CWHA
  • Attend at least 4 of our 6 shows
  • Not be disqualified (DQ)
  • Obtain a score other than Zero, in classes where you are scored.  Example:  reining

All CWHA shows will be held at PineRidge Equine Center, Manitoba’s premier equine facility, located in Winnipeg, Manitoba. PineRidge has good seating, space available for booths, and excellent parking. Geographically, Winnipeg is in the heart of horse country and draws a good representation of competitors and spectators.

As a result, sponsors will enjoy ample opportunity to advertise their products and services. Competitors and exhibitors will increase their skills in both horsemanship and showmanship.

Although it would require a serious commitment in travel hours for any cutter, the 2010 Mercuria National Cutting Horse Association of Cutting is an exciting string of competition held in world-class arenas, and often, in conjunction with venues which at the same time, host a variety of recreational opportunities.

The World Series of Cutting is a series of eight events across the United States and Canada that draws the world’s best Open cutting horses and Non-Pro riders. Each of the World Series shows offers $25,000 in added money to both the Open and Non-Pro events. Every finalist cashes a cheque and the crowd-pleasing format helps bring cutting to new audiences all across North America.

Battle in the Saddle, the country’s newest equine event has been selected as a tour stop in the National Cutting Horse Association’s Mercuria World Series of Cutting.

“The Mercuria/NCHA World Series showcases the sport’s best seasoned horses, and attracts tens of thousands of fans,” said Jeff Hooper, Executive Director of the National Cutting Horse Association. “We are excited to add a tour stop to Battle in the Saddle, itself a unique event in our industry.”

The Mercuria/NCHA World Series of Cutting began its 2010 tour in February at the San Antonio Stock Show & Rodeo and then made a visit to the Houston Livestock Show & Rodeo in March. From there, the tour hit the Breeder’s Invitational May 15 and 16, and continues on to the following locations:

June 24-26 – Reno Rodeo, Reno, Nevada

July 5-7 – Battle in the Saddle, Oklahoma City

July 11-15 – Calgary Stampede, Calgary, Alberta

September 16-18 – El Rancho Futurity, Rancho Murieta, California

October 7-9 – All American Quarter Horse Congress, Columbus, Ohio

Battle in the Saddle was announced last November in Oklahoma City and is an exciting new competition owned by State Fair Park and managed by AQHA. The competition will take place July 5-10. Battle in the Saddle is open to all breeds and will feature $130,000 in added money for an estimated $300,000 in total purses. Cutting, reining, roping and working cow horse classes will be recognized as AQHA special events. All breeds are welcome but Quarter Horses competing will receive AQHA points. The ranch horse competition is open to all ranches that meet the criteria of the AQHA-Bayer Best Remuda Award.

Roping events will be recognized by the American Rope Horse Futurity Association and follow ARHFA rules. Horses competing in the cutting will receive National Cutting Horse Association recognition. Ancillary reining classes will be approved by the National Reining Horse Association and NRHA affiliate Oklahoma Reining Horse Association. The National Reined Cow Horse Association will be involved as well.

Adding to the excitement of the competition, the selection trial for the United States Reining Team that will be representing the United States at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games will take place during Battle in the Saddle. See who will join the U.S. Equestrian Team as reining members to go for the gold at the 2010 Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games,www.alltechfeigames.com.

Battle in the Saddle will be held in conjunction with AQHA’s Youth World Cup, a team competition between youth from 17 nations scheduled to attend. In addition to the exciting equine competition in the arena, Battle in the Saddle will also feature a trade show. Other special events are also being planned to be held during the competition.

State Fair Park in Oklahoma City, often referred to as “The Horse Show Capital of the World,” is a premier equine facility that annually hosts the American Quarter Horse Association World Championship Show, the National Reining Horse Association Futurity and Derby, the U.S. Team Roping Championships, the International Finals Rodeo and many other major equine events.
