H3 held at the Keystone Center in Brandon, Manitoba on April 15th – 17th was a weekend filled with lessons, lectures and a trainer’s challenge. Held in conjunction with CHA’s region 2 conference, demoing lessons in the show ring, ranging from improving riding positions to jumping instructed with lessons taught by Manitoba’s CHA certified instructors Tara Reimer and Megan Rai-Ferguson.

A couple of the lecture sessions were featured with Alberta’s Dave Elliott on bitting and anatomy pictured below during his final lecture of the weekend.

Also featured was veterinarian Dr. Rochelle Lewis clinical associate in the Field Service at the Western College of Veterinary Medicine’s Veterinarian Teaching Hospital in Saskatchewan, covered lameness, strangles and foaling issues.

Featured in the show ring clinicians Lee Smith from Arizona who worked on lessons like trailer loading with patients, a gift she passes on from her horsemanship foundation taught to her by her first teacher Ray Hunt. Bruce Logan of Texas demoed how to keep your horse soft and supple when working cows in his cow horse sessions.

Bruce Logan on the left, works with participants on getting their horses soft before the cow even enters the arena.

Aaron Ralston of Colorado quickly switched gears teaching reining techniques instantaneously, after leaving his training session in the trainers challenge round pen.

After three days and only four hours of training, it was time for trainer challenge competitors Ralston, Jon Ensign, hailing from Montana, and last year’s champion Cain Quam, of Saskatchewan, to reveal which trainer had earnestly gained the trust of his new partner.  A horse that each of them had handpicked out of 10 horses, provided by D5 Performance Horses and Bridgeman Land and Livestock.

Ralston first in the show ring made sure his bright eyed fillies attention was focused on him before the pair set out to complete their course. And, wrapping up his final session, with what turned to be a cowy little filly.

Next Ensign, who at this point in the challenge had yet to climb on his horses back, still had some buck in her after he saddled her up. Once settled into her new surroundings, she willingly accepted the task at hand and completed her ground work course. But still at this point Ensign felt his filly wasn’t ready and respectfully bowed out telling the judges and crowd he would not be riding her in this final session. A decision that didn’t hinder Ensign final score as much as most may think,  as on the judges show down score card states, was the best decision made in consideration of the future and welfare of the horse to ride or not to ride, this being worth as much as 15 points.

Concluding the challenge was last year’s champion Quam, with his filly, confident in his leadership.

When it was all said and done, Ralston saddled up and rode away with the judges leading score of 1438.5 points,  in his first ever trainers challenge competition, followed by Quam with 1414 and then Ensign with 1257 points.

Newest NRHA Million Dollar Sire

Conquistator Whiz

After the checks were cut for the 2011 National Reining Breeders Classic, another reining sire entered the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA) record books. Unofficially, Conquistador Whiz became NRHA’s newest Million Dollar Sire thanks to the performance of his offspring at the Katy, Texas show. The sixteen-year-old stallion is the 20th horse to make this milestone achievement.

Conquistador Whiz, bred by Bob Loomis, came from the successful pairing of Loomis’ NRHA Seven Million Dollar Sire Topsail Whiz and the Bueno Chex mare Sugarita Chex. This match produced the first-ever third generation NRHA Million Dollar Sire. Conquistador Whiz’s grandsire Topsail Cody became an NRHA Million Dollar Sire in 1998. His sire Topsail Whiz joined the ranks in 2001.

Conquistador Whiz earned more than $100,000 in the NRHA show arena and was the 2000 NRHA Open Derby Champion, 2000 National Reining Breeders Classic Open Derby Champion, 2002 USET Festival of Champions USEF Reining Champion and 2002 World Equestrian Games Gold Medal Team member and Individual Silver Medalist. NRHA Corporate Partner Silver Spurs Equine purchased the sire from George Shifrin who owned the horse for a majority of his show career. He currently stands at Silver Spurs Equine in Cave Creek, Arizona.
Conquistador Whiz’s leading offspring include: KR Lil Conquistador ($401,027 NRHA LTE and NRHA Open Futurity Champion), Quistador ($112,945 NRHA LTE and 2010 Ariat Tulsa Reining Classic John Deere Level 4 Open Futurity Champion), JD Conquista Anna ($56,429 NRHA LTE and 2006 Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity Champion), Smart Dundee ($49,319 NRHA LTE and 2010 NRHA Futurity finalist in Open Levels 1-4) and Litn Up Conquistador ($49,105 NRHA LTE and Cinch NRHA Non Pro Futurity Champion).

Reserve Title for Griffin

Former National Reining Breeders Classic Champion Lance Griffin came close to snagging his third NRBC Non Pro Championship, finishing with the Reserve title on The Great Tag. The pair marked a 222 – not only winning the Reserve title, but also topping the Non Pro Prime Time. All total, the pair added nearly $25,000 to their lifetime earnings.

“He’d been solid in the go-rounds, and I knew he could be good today,” said the 55-year-old. “He was Reserve in the National Reining Horse Association Futurity, so I know he has a ton of talent. He just needs to be asked, but not over-asked. I hoped I could get from him what he could give me – and it worked.”

“I really wanted to win it on this horse – he’s pretty special to me,” said Griffin of The Great Tag, who is out of Pines BH, the dam of Futurity Champion The Great Whiz. “I won the NRBC Non Pro twice with his sire, Whiz N Tag Chex. This horse is a 6-year-old now, so we can’t compete in the Classic anymore. ”

Still, Griffin has his eyes pointed firmly toward the next big event – the NRHA Derby the last week of June. “I don’t really know what to do with a gelding with this much in earnings. We’ll probably show him in some of the 7-year-old classes, or maybe someone will want to buy him,” he explained.

“This is my favorite show. It’s the best pen to show in and we get to show the best horses in the world. It’s a shame that not more people get to see what goes on here – tomorrow night when the Open Finals go we’ll see the best reining in the world,” said Griffin. Because Griffin owns Whiz N Tag Chex, he also received the signature blue crystal sire award trophy.

Crazy Cowgirls Support Children’s Wish

The arrival of spring marks the start of what promises to be an exciting rodeo season for Cassie Horner and Shelby Cummings, who form the dynamic duo known as the Crazy Cowgirls. For the past three years, the Crazy Cowgirls have been travelling to rodeos throughout Alberta. More than just providing amazing trick riding performances, these young ladies have also been serving as ambassadors for Children’s Wish.

Since their partnership with Children’s Wish began, the Crazy Cowgirls have continuously found new ways to include their charity of choice in their performances. A Children’s Wish flag is always flown at the beginning of each performance and announcers share information about local children whose wish has been granted. The Alberta & NWT Chapter office is located in Calgary, AB with subchapters throughout the province but with a limited staff, the chapter relies on volunteers to help represent the foundation in rural communities. Stopping in any and all communities that host a rodeo, the Crazy Cowgirls are helping raise funds, and even more importantly, awareness for the Children’s Wish mission of granting the most heart felt of children diagnosed with a life threatening illness.

As part of their show, wherever possible, they invite local wish children to learn the basics of trick riding and perform a trick with them. This past summer, nine year old Phoenix, who had a liver transplant as a result of end-stage cirrhosis, got to ride with the girls in Brooks, AB.

To kick off their performing tour, Cassie and Shelby recently performed in Calgary for two shows as part of Aggie Days. While in town they met with Children’s Wish Chapter Director, Jason Evanson to present the donations collected over the last year, totaling $2,500. These young women are turning their passion for riding into a way of helping create the magic of a wish. Whenever the girls finish a show and are signing autographs at their trailer, a Children’s Wish donation box is sure to be close by.

About Children’s Wish

The Children’s Wish Foundation grants wishes to children between the ages of three and 17 who have been diagnosed with a life threatening illness. Since our inception 27 years ago, we have granted over 17,000 wishes to Canadian children. The AB & NWT Chapter grants approximately 120 wishes annually, roughly one wish every three days to a local child.  To learn more visit ChildrensWish.ca

Ranch Horse Versatility Fans Wanted

SUBMITTED BY JAN ROSE

The newly-formed Alberta Ranch Horse Versatility Association is seeking new members.

President Russ McKenzie says the ARHVA is organized like its counterpart in Saskatchewan, organized two years ago. Currently, there are 12 members in Central Alberta from Entwistle to Two Hills. They are under the auspices of the American Quarter Horse Association and follow its rules.

Membership is not restricted to owners of Quarter Horses, but open to any breed from stock to purebred, McKenzie explains. The purpose is to promote better horses and to give people a new venue.

There are five classifications in the association:

Ranch Riding is rail-type class that showcases a horse’s movement at the walk, trot and lope. Stops, back-ups and turns are also demonstrated. In some shows all horses are in the arena simultaneously with the judge calling for a gait. In others, horse and rider are alone following a prescribed pattern. Horses are judged on obedience, transitions, purity of gait, and correct leads.

Ranch Trail is a six-obstacle course that a working horse might encounter in regular work. Horses work at a walk, trot and lope while following a pattern. Working a gate is a mandatory obstacle, and dragging a log. Also mandatory is dismounting, unbridling, and re-bridling.

Ranch Cutting uses a small herd of cattle released into the arena and a specific cow’s number is called. Horse and rider have 2.5 minutes to locate the cow, cut it from the herd and prevent it from returning to the herd, then penning the animal at the arena’s opposite end. Turn-back riders help keep the herd from interfering with cutting and keeping the cattle at the end of the arena. Riders aren’t penalized for aiding their horse by reining. But the horse should display some natural herding instinct and working the cow on its own.

Working Ranch Horse category is comprised of a reining pattern, working a single cow, and roping a cow. The rider has six minutes to complete the task.

Ranch Conformation is a halter class held at day’s end. Horses enter the arena singly. The horse is trotted to a cone, turned left and lined up parallel to the wall for a judge’s inspection. Horses are judged as to their suitability to ranch work, their breed standard. Stock-type horses are more desirable then draft, race horses or racers. Sexes are judged together.

APHA Achieves 40,000 Fan Milestone

Communication via the social media has reached new heights at the American Paint Horse Association (APHA). Since the debut of the APHA Facebook webpage in April 2009, the association has been utilizing this tool to provide an innovative avenue for members and Paint Horse enthusiasts to connect and interact. Support of the APHA page has continued to grow, and today APHA announced reaching an impressive milestone on Friday, April 8, by accumulating its 40,000th Facebook fan.

In early April APHA began a campaign to build anticipation for the event by announcing that the 40,000th person to become a fan of the page would receive a special prize. It only took a few days before the goal was not only met, but exceeded.

Justin Buschbacher, a longtime APHA member from Wentzville, Mo., was the big winner. “I have realized Facebook is the easiest way to see what is going on in the world today, and APHA’s Facebook page is no exception,” said Justin when asked what prompted him to become a fan of the page. “I am looking at attending this year’s APHA World Show in the fall if my military duties allow me to do so, and I know I can keep up-to-date on all the latest news through the Association’s page.”

To commemorate the milestone, Justin received 40 APHA branded items including t-shirts, books, caps, posters and more. APHA is excited to be a part of this cutting-edge communications tool and thrilled with the response its page continues to receive. More Facebook contests and fun activities are planned.

The Association uses its Facebook page to inform its members and fans about news and happenings affecting the organization. To view the APHA Facebook page and become a fan, go to facebook.com/americanpainthorse.
