Reiners Commemorate Kaylynn

Kaylynn Malmberg

The Canadian reining community continues to remember the loss of a gifted young rider. In memory of a very special young lady, the Canadian Reining Committee is establishing the Kaylynn Malmberg Young/Junior Riders Reining Award. The award will be presented to a young member of the reining community that most exemplifies Kaylynn’s love of horses, determination, courage and inspiration.

Nominee submissions will be requested each year and the award will be presented to the person who has shown courage and determination to overcome the most difficult of obstacles and distress to accomplish their horse related dream; has unselfishly provided support by helping wherever required, cheering and encouraging for that something extra; inspires by example — even at the most difficult time exhibiting a positive attitude, putting that extra effort into the activity; and goes above and beyond what is required for self or others regardless of any personal situation.

Kaylynn Malmberg was a strong young lady who in 2010 left an Alberta hospital after chemotherapy following brain surgery and flew to Lexington, Kentucky to compete with her team in the North American Junior and Young Riders Championships in Reining. During the week long competition she became a celebrity, not only because she was a member of the gold medal winning Alberta team, but also because of the person she was.

“There is no greater tragedy in life as that of a young person taken far before her time,” said Gary Yaghdjian, chair of the Canadian Reining Committee. “With that in mind we are able to honour Kaylynn Malmberg’s courage, determination, and her ability to overcome adversity by offering the Kaylynn Malmberg Young/Junior Riders Reining Award.”

Watch for more details on the Kaylynn Malmberg Young/Junior Riders Reining Award in the next few weeks.

Canadian Para-Equestrians Win Gold!

Lauren Barwick

Lauren Barwick helps put Canada's Para-Equestrian Team on top of the world.

Inspirational riders, put themselves on top of the world’s podium. Canadian Para-Equestrian riders Lauren Barwick, Eleonore Elstone and Ashley Gowanlock won not only the team competition, which moved Canada into fourth place in the world, but were also victorious in eight of nine classes, posting scores that were all 70% or higher, in their stellar appearance at CPEDI 3* Arruda dos Vinhos in Portugal, held December 2–4, 2011.

Using the combined scores from the Team test and Individual test, Canadian team members were victorious with a total of 427.589%. Norway placed second with 408.99%, while the host nation Portugal finished third with 401.614%. Rounding out the top four, with 387.251%, was the team from Spain.

Canada’s individual gold and silver medalist from the 2008 Paralympic Games, Barwick of Aldergrove, BC, rode Equine Canada’s nine-year-old Oldenburg mare, Off to Paris, to victories in all three of her Grade II classes. In the Team Test, Barwick and Off to Paris earned a score of 71.952%. For the Individual test they received 70.952%, and they won their Freestyle, scoring almost 7% higher than her nearest competitor, with 76.550%.

Canada's Para-Equestrian Team“It’s an incredible feeling being able to come together as a team and share in one another’s success,” said Barwick. “This is what it’s all about. My mares traveled well and I was extremely pleased with how they performed, they have both improved since our European tour in July.”

Riding Lauren Barwick’s nine-year-old Oldenburg mare, Ferdonia 2, Gowanlock, of Surrey, BC, finished in second place in the Grade 1b Team Test with 70.000%. The pair then went on to win the Individual test with a score of 73.696% and the Freestyle with 76.900%, which was the top score awarded for the entire CPEDI 3* competition.

Canada's Para-Equestrian Team“The Team came to Portugal with a job to do and we definitely got the job done,” said Gowanlock. “We wouldn’t have been successful without the solid coaching from Andrea Taylor, all of the behind the scenes work from the grooms and support staff, and the organization of our chef d’équipe, Elizabeth. I am beyond grateful to Lauren Barwick for allowing me to borrow Ferdonia 2, and am excited to see where the partnership goes from here.”

Langley, BC, native Elstone also won all three tests in Grade IV aboard Zareno, a seven-year-old Dutch Warmblood owned by Elisabeth Posmus-Penterman. In their first competition together, Elstone received 70.344 % in the Team test, 70.645% for her ride in the Individual test and 72.150% in the Freestyle.

Canada's Para-Equestrian Team“The results for our team in Portugal are outstanding,” said chef d’équipe Elizabeth Quigg-Robinson. “Initially, we were faced with major challenges; a very long journey complicated when the horses were delayed by mechanical failure of the aircraft, riders caught in the disruptions of Portugal’s general strike, and lost baggage. Then the tide turned as the three riders won team gold, took first place in eight out of nine classes, and achieved a number of personal bests in international competition.

“A strong international judging panel gave us a clear indication that we can expect to be very competitive at the 2012 Paralympic games in London,” added Quigg-Robinson.

Chef d’équipe Quigg-Robinson, team coach Andrea Taylor, stable manager Alice Beatty, and support staff Lauren Massey will accompany and provide support to the Canadian para-equestrian riders for the duration of the competition in Portugal.

“We are immensely proud of all our team members,” said Akaash Maharaj, CEO of Equine Canada and the Canadian Equestrian Team. “This would have been a stellar performance under any circumstances, but it was the act of true champions to deliver such strong results when the stakes were so high. They have not only placed us firmly in contention as a qualifying nation for the 2012 Paralympic Games; they have put the world on notice that Canada will be riding for the Gold medal in London.”

Paint Horse World Championship Results

Paint Horse World Show

Paint Horses hit the world’s stage to face off for this year’s championship titles. More than $500,000 awarded in cash and prizes among 1,029 horses during 11-day show

Owners and exhibitors from 43 states, Canada, Australia, France and Mexico shared a common goal recently at the 2011 World Championship Show in Fort Worth, Texas, hosted by the American Paint Horse Association—to be named “champion.”

The show offered classes in a full range of disciplines, from halter to hunter under saddle, and showmanship to reining. This was the second phase of World Championship competition for the Association, featuring 235 classes. While the 178 World title classes are the backbone of the action, APHA also offers slot, Breeders’ Futurity, challenge and sweepstakes classes that offer cash payouts instead of a championship title. The total number of entries was 2,294.

Preliminary payout numbers indicate over $339,000 in cash was paid out to top exhibitors at the APHA World Show, including $116,761 in the Breeders’ Futurity; $110,250 in the slots; $78,300 in Challenge classes; and $19,020 in Sweepstakes payouts.

New classes
The largest group of classes added to the World Show was the Open and Amateur cattle and reining classes, which have been held during the summer installment of the show for the past several years. This change created a more uniform feel and timeline for our competitors, bringing them into the fold with the other Open and Amateur events.

APHA also teamed with other organizations within the industry to offer several opportunities for exhibitors to earn incentive money while in the show ring. Eight Southern Belle Breeders’ classes added $500 each, along with jackpotted entry fees; and two National Snaffle Bit Association (NSBA) Stallion Incentive Fund classes paid out $1,250 each plus jackpotted entry fees. Novice Amateur Hunt Seat Equitation Over Fences was added as a World Championship class. A Limited Division was offered within each slot class. Meanwhile, the Breeders’ Futurity added six performance classes for 2-year-olds in the program. Appropriate classes were approved by NSBA and the National Reining Horse Association (NRHA).

Breeders’ Trust Select Sale
The APHA Breeders’ Trust Select Sale presented by Markel Insurance was held Saturday, November 5 and offered Paint enthusiasts the perfect place to find a great horse. A total of 44 horses were consigned to the sale with JUST SAY JOSE coming out as the top-selling horse of the day, bringing former owner, Calvin Emig, $10,500.

A Yearling Sale Stakes session was added this year with 20 yearlings consigned. Yearlings selling in this session are now eligible to show in the 2-Year-Old Western Pleasure Sale Stakes class at the 2012 World Show. APHA will guarantee $2,500 in added money, and will match private sponsorships up to an additional $5,000 for a grand total of $12,500! The minimum payout is currently estimated at $19,300.

Social events
Although everyone was on hand to show their horses, not all of the action took place inside the arena. Exhibitors were treated to complimentary food and beverages at the Amateur Welcome Reception sponsored by Ron & JoAnna Shelly on November 2. World Show Sponsor eyeD Equine Identification hosted two socials in preparation for the Breeders’ Trust Sale, plus two horsemanship clinics conducted by “Road to the Horse” Champion Richard Winters toward the end of the show. Julie Marweg and Gillespie Show Horses hosted dinner for all on November 9 to promote Living Large. Championship dog races proved popular once again as well, as did shopping dozens of vendors in the Colors of the Season gift show.

SUBMITTED BY SPHC PRESIDENT NICOLE GAUTHIER

The Saskatchewan Paint Horse Club finishes the chapter on another highly successful year! Well winter is upon us and bring on the fuzzy hair coats!!! I hope everyone is geared up to have a great holiday season.

The SPHC would like to thank everyone who helped out this year to make our 2011 events a great success!! This includes all of our sponsors, volunteers, participants and members. We just finished up with agribition events and a huge thank you to everyone involved with setting up the booth, running the booth, taking care of the filly, selling tickets and tearing down the booth. You guys did a great job again this year.

Congratulations to Kelsey Bouchard from McLean, SK for winning this years agribition raffle filly. This filly is a 2010 buckskin overo named NSP Rich Brown Sugar aka “Sweets”. She drew a lot of attention at agribition with her big blue eyes. This was my first “agribition experience” and it was great visiting with all the kids and telling them all about Paint Horses and our club. Thank you to everyone who purchased tickets and supported the club.

We have four young ladies who made the PAC leaders list in several events this year. Congratulations to Audra Cooper and Clayboys Sassy Girl winning the high point SPHC PAC award for 2011. The other three who did very well this year included Taylor Gardner and Mr Sylvester placing reserve high point, Samantha Boxall and A Classic Duramax placing third, Taylor Gardner and The Best Man placing fourth and Britanny Campbell with Laces Medicine placing fifth. Great job ladies.

The SPHC annual meeting is booked for January 21st at Peter D’s in Saskatoon. #2-1301 8th Street East. AGM starts at 2:30pm and all members are welcome to join us for the 2011 review. For all 2011 and earlier members we have a couple of board vacancies if you are interested in joining the board of directors you are welcome to join us at the meeting to gather more information or submit your nominations. Calling all youth!! The Saskatchewan Youth Paint Horse Club is planning to meet after the AGM and would love to see you out to learn more about what the club plans are for 2012 and how you can join in on the fun. If you are interested please feel free to join us.

As you may already be aware, Saskatoon Prairieland Park is hosting the 2012 Equine Expo for the first time February 17 19, 2012. This will be an excellent learning event for horse enthusiasts of all kinds as it brings many aspects of horse care/training/trends/fashion/etc to the table. The SPHC plans to have a booth set up the entire weekend to help promote our club, provide membership information and forms, and also present the newly formed Saskatchewan Junior Paint Horse Club, the SjPHC!

Within the schedule for the weekend, there will be a parade of breeds Saturday night around 7pm. The SPHC would like to take part in this demo to accentuate the versatility and beauty of our American Paint Horses. We are currently looking for 3 registered APHA horses to take part in the breed demo. We ask that you send us your “application” by answering the questions that are listed below, along with an attached photo of your registered paint horse. We only ask that you agree to purchase (or renew) a 2012 SPHC membership and to cover the cost for stalling your horse at the facility ($20 for a box stall for the entire weekend; does not include shavings. You can either bring your own or buy bags of shavings from Prairieland).

Selections will be based on versatility, conformation, color (with an exception to one solid paint bred that will be selected), and the overall presence the horse may offer. It is absolutely necessary that these horses be broke and in the right mind set to handle large crowds, loud/abrupt noises, speakers, carts, the indoor arena, etc.
