Alberta Sports Hall of Fame to Induct Jerri Duce Phillips

Ten individuals have been named for induction this year into the Alberta Sports Hall of Fame, and include nine-time Canadian barrel racing champion and well-known trick rider Jerri Duce Phillips.

Fit, finished, and all sporting documented arena credentials - a barrel horse, a reiner, a cutter, a reined cowhorse, and a rope horse - packed the top five seller positions at Billings Livestock Commission’s three-day “February Special Catalog Sale” February 26-27-28. Officially backed by money won, points earned, or awards received, the horses carried resumes that included NBHA, NRHA, NCHA, NRCHA, or AQHA achievements - and - included four stallions and a gelding that averaged a $24,000 sale ticket.

Canadian Breeder is a top consignor at 2009 World Championship Sale

Dunit On The Range, consigned by Bill Rinzema, topped the performance horse section at $41,500 and was purchased by Gail Beaver Torsell of Centre Hall, PA at the 2009 World Championship Sale in Oklahoma City. The yearling red roan stallion is sired by Open Range and out of Emerald Selection, by Selection So Simple. Emerald Selection is a 2001 red dun mare who earned 70 AQHA Western Pleasure points.

Calgary Stampede Chuckwagon Canvas Auction Results

The first chuckwagon canvas auction of the year was for the Calgary Stampede Rangeland Derby and held on Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Archie Boyce Pavilion on Stampede Park in Calgary Alberta. $1,966,000.00 was bid on the 36 participating wagons, up $274,000.00. It was the 11th consecutive year the Calgary Auction crossed over the 1.5 million dollar mark, in addition to being the 5th highest total in the 32 year history of the event.

The Appaloosa Horse Club (ApHC) gave members and enthusiasts the option to spread more holiday cheer this year with Appaloosa holiday greeting cards! With the success of this year’s greeting cards, the ApHC has decided to make it an annual tradition by implementing the Holiday Card Contest!

Olds College Farrier Science Diploma becomes two-year program

Responding to industry demand, Olds College will be changing its already acclaimed one-year Farrier program to a two-year program in October of 2010. The college's new Farrier Science diploma will see students emerging with increased knowledge of equine anatomy, horse handling and horse husbandry. As well, emphasis will be increased on welding, basic blacksmithing and advanced corrective and therapeutic horseshoeing. In keeping with the college's emphasis on real-life, hands-on learning, program completion will now require a total of 8 months of Directed Field Study, split into five-month and three-month sections respectively.

2010 AQHA Youth World Cup – Team Canada Youth Members appointed

A major initiative of the Canadian Quarter Horse Association (CQHA) is to co-ordinate a team to represent Canada at each biennial American Quarter Horse Association (AQHA) Youth World Cup. The Youth World Cup competition is an educational, leadership-based event for youth members from around the world, culminating in showcasing skills learned in an atmosphere of friendly competition.
