The Saskatchewan Cutting Horse Association presented their Annual Limited Aged Event along with the Moose Jaw Weekend Cutting Horse Show August 4 to 7. The Golden Mile Arena was an exciting place to be to get to see the new crop of three year olds make their first trip to the show pen to show their style on great ground and good cattle!

Blu Rey, a red roan gelding sired by Dual Rey and out of the mare Autumn Blu won both days to claim the Open Futurity Aggregate Winner for owner, Richard Hollingsworth, Valley View, Alberta. Richard purchased Blu Rey from Stan Thomas’ dispersal sale in the fall of 2010. He and trainer, Jeff Schwitzer, also of Valley View, were looking for mares when this guy caught their eye. Jeff says “He’s good to train, quick footed and really understands working a cow!”

Reserve Aggregate honors in the Open Futurity were tied between Bunnys Taz and Dual N Style. Bunnys Taz is a blaze faced sorrel mare, sired by Pepto Taz and out of the mare Bunny Wood. She is owned by Carol Bailey from Kyle, Saskatchewan, and shown by Clint Christianson, Bracken, Saskatchewan. Dual N Style is also a sorrel mare, sired by Dual Smart Rey and out of the Stylish Oak daughter, Stylish Little Curly. She is owned by Ryan and Jessica Hodgson of Calahoo, Alberta, and trained and shown by Ryan.

The Non-Pro Futurity Aggregate went to Tazs Hickory Sue, sired by Pepto Taz and out of the mare Travs Slingshot Sue. She is out of Don Lester’s breeding program in Oregon. Owner Vanessa Sproule, Pincher Creek, Alberta, purchased the sorrel mare from trainer, Clint Christianson in time for her to ride in the 2011 futurity run.

Reserve Non-Pro Aggregate went to BSF Kiss Shy Anna, the third of 3 full sisters that Gwen McMeekin, Alhambra Alberta, purchased from the Bamber Stock Farm program. This bay mare is sired by Cheyenne Shorty and out of the mare Sassy Anna Doll and was trained and shown by Gwen’s husband Bruce. Gwen describes the mare as a “super wonderful horse that even her granddaughters ride!”

Blu Rey

Blu Rey rode by Jeff Schwitzer owned by Richard Hollingsworth, winning the Open Futurity at Moose Jaw.

Dianas Cat claimed the Redhead Equipment Open Derby Aggregate for owner Dan Novotny, Ground Birch, British Columbia. This is a sorrel gelding out of Cats Red Feather and the mare, OH Lil Duchess. Dianas Cat was purchased from the Swan Lake Ranch as a 2 year old. Trainer Ryan Hodgson started showing him this year and says “this horse has a Good Open Horse written in his future!”

The Reserve Open Derby Aggregate went to Playin On Desire. A roan gelding owned by Dwight Murray, Okotoks, Alberta, and also trained by Ryan Hodgson. This red roan gelding sired by Smart Lil Player and out of the mare Peptos Desire won a bunch of money in his 3 year old year. Ryan says “after riding this guy I’ve started riding more of these Smart Lil Players, which also supports one of our Canadian breeding programs.”

The Non-Pro Derby Aggregate was taken by Amando Smoothie for owner and rider Robert Krentz, Steinbach, Manitoba. This chestnut gelding is sired by Smooth As A Cat and out of the mare, Amanda Starlight, a daughter of Amanda Lena, one of the best Doc Olena daughters. Robert purchased him at a yearling sale in Fort Worth, started riding him as a 2 year old and then sent him to Dustin Gonnet, Okotoks for further training and a successful 3 year old show year. We’ll see them at this fall’s aged events!

Reserve in the Non-Pro Derby went to CO Computer Pepto owned and shown by Norm Podesky, Okotoks, Alberta. This sorrel stallion is sired by Peptoboonsmal and out of the great mare CD Computer Doll, who scored the highest score ever at the Calgary Stampede Cutting. Trainer, Ryan Hodgson says that not many horses can get around like this one and that Norm has other well bred horses out of the same mare at the ranch.

The Plains Environmental Open Classic Aggregate went to Pepsi Royal Play, owned by Don Biette of Estevan, Saskatchewan. This 6 year old chestnut mare that Don raised is out of his cutting mare Pepsi Royal Play and sired by Russ and Donna Hall’s stud, Play Me Out. She was shown to the win by Clint Christianson.

WS Playful Lil Kitty won the Aggregate of the Moose Jaw Futurity in 2009 for owners Olga and Rudy Thompson, Bulyea, Saskatchewan, and came back to take the Reserve in this year’s Plains Environmental Open Classic under the saddle of Dale Clearwater, Hanley, Saskatchewan. The Thompson’s had purchased this sorrel mare sired by Cheyenne Shorty and out of the mare Smart N Playful as a 2 year old from Carl and Julia Gerwien’s Willow Spring Ranch Sale and have been enjoying success with her ever since!

The Plains Environmental Non-Pro Classic Aggregate went to Peptos Smokin Hot, a six year old red roan gelding sired by Peptoboonsmal and out of the mare Dry Shadow. After owner Russ Hall, Grunthal, Manitoba, purchased this colt as a 4 year old in Texas, he arrived in Canada on a Thursday night, and he showed him on the following Saturday without having worked him on cows prior. Russ drove all night to get to Moose Jaw for this show and he said “Peptos Smokin Hot, being the solid show horse that he is still packed me.”

Reserve in the Plains Environmental Non-Pro Classic Reserve was BSF Sister Dereka for owner Gwen McMeekin and shown by Bruce McMeekin. This bay mare is another one of the Cheyenne Shorty/Sassy Anna Doll crosses that McMeekin’s selected from Bamber Stock Farm. This mare was started by Bruce, the sent to Brad Pedersen for training and a very successful 3 year old year, winning over $20,000 from Olds, Red Deer and Calgary. The McMeekins are looking forward to showing this mare in the fall aged events and another good weekend horse for the long haul!
