The Western Horse Sale, now in its 16th year, produced by Speight Cutting and Performance Horses saw 70 quality horse presented by a number of high profile consignors September 30th, in Red Deer, Alberta, during the Canadian Supreme show and trade fair, held September 25th to October 1st, 2011.

This year\’s auction featured 54 cutting, performance, and breeding stock horses sold under the gavel of Dan Skeels of Rimbey, AB. The sales resulted in a top ten average of $7,925, (top ten average of 2010 was $7,530) and an overall average of $3,543.52, (2010 overall average was $3,150).

The top selling horse of the sale was a fancy yearling (15 sold) stallion, lot # 50, MP Chrome Catt, sire; Sophisticated Catt (High Brow Cat), the dam: Rosie O Dual (Dual Pep). He was consigned by Charles and Laynee Roberts, (Mighty Peace Performance Horses) of St. Isidore, AB, and was purchased by Bill Jani of Calgary, AB, for $10,800.

The second high selling yearling of the sale was a handsome red roan stallion, lot # 6, Hes A Country Catt, sire: Hes A Peptospoonsful, (Peptoboonsmal) dam: Catarena Girl,(High Brow Cat) and was consigned by Doug Hines of Saltcoat, SK, and sold for $9.000 to Harold Radke of Ponoka, AB.

Of the two-year-olds sold (15), the high seller was lot # 54, a strong, talented bay stallion sired by Smart Mate (Smart Little Lena) dam: Lena On My Hickory (Docs Hickory), consigned by Tyler Darroch of Estevan, SK, and sold to John Swales of Millarville, AB, for $7,500.

Our second high selling two-year-old was lot # 2, Smokinic Kid, sire: Pepinics Master (Master Remedy), dam: Pennys Dandy Kid (The Gunsmoke Kid) and was consigned by Wanda Cormack of Pickardville, AB, and sold to Lorene Shorty of Pritchard, BC, for $4,000.

Our top selling three-year-old (5 sold), was lot # 68, WS Son OF A Rey, sire: TR Dual Rey, dam: Greystones Bunny (Bob Acre Doc), a talented and successful cutting performer, consigned by Willow Spring Ranch of Nanton, AB, and brought $4,500 from Dick Hollingsworth of Valleyview, AB.

Our second high selling three-year-old was lot # 55, a handsome sorrel gelding, Housekeepers Pistol, sire: Pistols Smart Acre, (Smart Little Pistol) dam: Housekeepers Joy (Doc O Dude) consigned by Bill and Elaine Speight of Rocky Mtn. House, AB, and brought $3,300 from George Bunny of Penhold, AB.

There were 13 riding horses sold that were four-years-old and over, the highest (and reserve high seller of the sale) was an eight-year-old sorrel mare, lot # 60, a Canadian Supreme Non-Pro Reserve 3-yr-old Champion, Pistols Cocoa Jay, sire: Pistols Smart Acre (Smart Little Pistol) dam: Bar Olena Dude (Doc O Dude). She was consigned by Arlan and Cheri Ruf of Methow, Washington, and brought $9,750 from Paul and Lorraine Milbradt of Olds, AB.

The second high selling horse in this division was a talented four-year-old sorrel mare, Royal Red Lights, sire: CD Lights (CD Olena), dam: Playboys Royal Dry (Freckles Playboy) consigned by Willow Spring Ranch of Nanton, AB, and brought $6,700 from Chad and Lisa Eaton from Arcola, SK.

There were six quality broodmares presented that sold in the sale, the high seller being lot # 71, a 2005 sorrel mare, Smart Doc A Freckles, sire: Smart Little Lena, (Doc O Lena) dam: Doc A Freckles (Colonel Freckles) consigned by Pekisko Ranch of Red Deer, AB, and sold to Ron Rothwell of Miami, MB, for $8,000.

Our second high selling broodmare was lot # 70, a 2000 buckskin mare, Miss Dry Pepinic sire: Pepinics Master, (Master Remedy) dam: Freedoms Miss Holly (Dry Doc Freedom) was consigned by Max and Corrine Tateson of Tilly, AB, and was purchased by James Szmyrko of Boyle, AB, for $6,600.

The quality of horses was up from last year, and buyers are getting better educated on performance bloodlines. Our overall average was up a bit from last year, due to the higher number of good riding horses consigned.
