Winner of Signed Shane Doan Jersey!

Back on April 1, 2010, I posted a contest that would allow readers to win an autographed Shane Doan jersey. Doan is the captain of Phoenix Coyotes and hails from Halkirk, Alberta. He also has a thing for Quarter Horses! Sadly, the Phoenix Coyotes are out of the playoffs for this year, but no one can argue that the desert team played their hearts out to get as far in the 2010 Stanley Cup Conference Quarterfinals as they did.

Doan has played all 14 of his NHL seasons with the Winnpeg Jets/Phoenix Coyotes franchise.

In honor of that great feat – an accomplishment that has caused many Phoenix fans to come out of the woodwork and salute a team which started the season with a long shot chance of making the playoffs – and Doan’s love for horses, I asked readers to tell me who their heroes-with-horse connections were. Here are some of the answers I received:

Susan Wall Said:
“My horsey hero’s are the ladies from Wild Deuce Outfitters – Terri McKinney and Brenda Murdock. They love to share knowledge and fun with all their clients. What started out as a client/clinician relationship has blossomed into some very special friendships. I am continually amazed at their positive effects on both people and horses to keep all safe and working together. Beautiful people they are!!”

Justin Said:
“I would have to say Jim Stewart. He was always promoting horses from youth academy clubs to local clubs to the national level you could always count on him. An all around fine human being.”

And drum roll please…  the winner of the signed jersey!

Joyce Said:
“That is a tough question. There have been so many I could probably write one for every day this month. I would have to say my hero is Brenda Nobel. She is always willing to help anybody. Brenda has been riding since she was a very young girl and still competes at local shows and barrel racing. I never started riding again until I was in my 40ties and Brenda, being older than myself, always inspires me to keep working to be better. Brenda always has time to discuss any horse problem and will help you and your horse. Brenda is the first one to help a young rider. She will be right beside you encouraging you all the way. (Yelling at you from the sidelines if you need it). At the local shows it gives old and young someone to turn to. The young riders are so thrilled if they come close to or beat Brenda at at show. She is very tough to beat but she will be the first to tell you that you only win with hard work. She rides every day that she can. I have had the thrill of riding with Brenda this winter and she is my hero.”

And just in case you want to take a peek at my highly sophisticated method of picking a winner…

Our friend, Mark Parsons, drawing a name outta the bucket for the winner of the jersey...

Congratulations Joyce!!

Celebrating Spring

A weekend is a great reason to celebrate for horsepeople as it usually involves an equine-related activity of some flavor. I figure particularly this weekend, it being the first of May, is cause to break out the contest. To win one of two of these lovely Farnam Supermasks just enter in the Comment section below and tell us what your horse plans for the weekend include. It may be something as simple as spending some quality barn-time with your horse or attending a show or event. With any luck, it won’t be in the same genre as mine, which is set to feature spring cleaning and repair of a certain feed room.

We’ll randomly choose two winners and the lucky recipients will be donning their equine friends in one of these fashionable fly masks just in time for bug season.

Contest closes on Monday, May 3, so don’t delay.

Brand It Contest Winners

Alrighty, it’s time to announce the winners of our Brand-It Contest. First of all, we’ll let you in on the top five brand names embedded in the hearts of our readers. Incidentally, here at command center of, we have developed a highly technical system for deriving these results. . .

The top five named brands in the contest answers were:

Cruel Girl

Thanks everyone for participating in our inaugural online contest. I’ll be back later with week with another. Here’s our top three winners:

Katrina T. entered on April 6
Alysha entered on April 6
Kat M. entered on April 6

(P.S. – no you didn’t miss the fine print stating April 6 entries received priority; it was a complete fluke that all three winners drawn entered on April 6)

You lucky gals please contact Beth at [email protected] with your particulars, you have 30 days to claim your prize.

Brand It

Welcome to our second (the first being MY STABLE LIFE’s Shane Doan autographed jersey) online contest! We’re going to kick this off in high fashion. Cowboy fashion, that is. After all, what says Western more than a pair of western jeans? Heck, even Robert Redford got grief for not wearing an authentic cowboy brand in The Horse Whisperer. Just because we’re pleased as punch that you’ve tuned into our new website, we’re going to give away three iconic Cruel Girl brand western style jeans, in your style, in your size. All you have to do is let us know – in the Comment section below – what your favorite western brand or logo is – it could be tack, clothing, ranch brands, whatever has a connection to the western lifestyle.

We’ll randomly choose three winners and the lucky recipients will be wearing a pair of these jeans lickety-split.

I guarantee you will look this good wearing them. (trailer, horse and long hair not included)

Contest closes Apr. 26

Hi everyone, comments for this post is now closed. Thanks for entering, check here for winners! And click on the Contests Topic to enter ongoing contests.

Win an Autographed Shane Doan Jersey!

Read MY STABLE LIFE and win this great prize!

As a former Olympian, a gold and silver medal winner at the World Championships and the Captain of the Phoenix Coyotes hockey team, Shane Doan is the pride of Canada. From Halkirk, Alberta, to the Winnipeg Jets, to the Arizona desert, Doan has proven that he can rise to any challenge and is the ultimate leader. As the Coyotes have clinched a berth in the 2010 Stanley Cup Playoffs, this autographed jersey is a timely and priceless artifact. Doan has passion for Quarter Horses and makes an appearance on My Stable Life, warranting this jersey as a most fitting prize.

To us, Doan is a hero. And it’s pretty cool that he just-so-happens to have a thing for cow horses, ropers and reiners. So… I want to hear about your heroes with horse connections. Let me know by commenting at MY STABLE LIFE. Tell me about people who are helping the horse community or simply lending a hand to a horsey friend. Large or small, I want to hear about them!! And be sure to tell me why they are a hero in your eyes.

The winner will be drawn randomly from comment submissions.

Contest closes April 30, 2010.

Best Babies Batch #1

Because it’s a beautiful spring day. Because we await our own new arrival here at the log house. Because it’s difficult to think of any subject which can loosen the words “grab the camera” from any horseperson’s lips more readily. Because I can’t wait to show you the first set of submissions to our Best Babies Photos Contest. Because I fell in love with photographing foals when we had our first two years ago, pictured above with my daughter. Because I want to encourage you to capture those short-lived days of foalhood.

Here then, without further ado, is a selection of the first set of entries we’ve received for our Best Babies Photo Contest.
