The annual Big West Quarter Horse Show was held over July 8-10 in Drayton Valley, Alberta. I thought I would recap the highlights and the high points awards and the futurity winners.
Stake Winners
Trail Stake Winner – Hot Obsession and Tracy Mills.
(Interesting fact: I spoke to Tracy and she said that every time the mare has entered that trail stake she has won it.)
HUS Stake Winner – In My Red High Heels and Chris Miller.
(There was actually three entries in the class and all three entries tied for first place and it went to a tiebreaker)
Yearling Lunge Line – Sudden Sign Of Faith and Steve Schiestel
Western Pleasure surprisingly had no entries, as people were not allowed to enter at the gate.
High Point Awards
Amateur – Tracy Mills and Hot Obsession
Youth – My Absolute Delight and Danielle MacPherson
Sr. Horse – Mr Dimensions and Lisa Schiestel
Jr. Horse – Tommy Lee Loper and Deserie Armstrong
Every year at this show there is a team tournament that selects five team members and points from various classes count towards the team tournament. Over the years the team tournament has been a success with prizes ranging from brand new Blue Ribbon saddles to some pretty fancy spur straps which were the top prize for this year. From what I heard there were clippers, saddle pads, saddle stands and Kippy belts along with the spur straps.
In a previous year, I was lucky enough to win the blue Ribbon Saddle and I also won an English saddle for winning a high point award! The team tournament can be a great friend!
Coming up next in the Quarter Horse Association of Alberta circuit is the Wildrose Quarter Horse Show held at the end of July at the Westerner Grounds in Red Deer. I will be sure to keep you all up to date on the happenings at the show as there are futurity titles up for grabs.
